A new offer can look like a big jump on paper and still leave you with less buying power. The headline percentage is your nominal raise. Subtract inflation and you get your real raise: what the extra money is actually worth.
Example: moving from $100,000 to $120,000 is a 20% raise. With 4% inflation you would need $104,000 just to keep your current lifestyle, so the real gain is about $16,000, or roughly 16%. Turn on Adjust for inflation above to see this for your own offers.
Look beyond base salary. Add up everything you would receive in a year for each offer (salary, expected bonus, the yearly value of vesting equity and other recurring pay), compare the totals, and then adjust for inflation to see the real difference. OfferCompare does this side by side for every component.
Subtract your current pay from the new pay, divide by your current pay and multiply by 100. For example, going from $100,000 to $120,000 is ($120,000 − $100,000) ÷ $100,000 × 100 = a 20% hike.
A nominal raise is the headline percentage increase. A real raise subtracts inflation, because rising prices reduce what your money can buy. A 20% raise with 4% inflation is roughly a 16% real raise.
Yes. Use the value that vests each year rather than the total grant. Public-company stock is close to cash, while early-stage startup equity is riskier, so many people discount it or compare offers with and without it.
